Celebrating the Heart of Old-Time and Bluegrass Music at the Hoppin' John Fiddlers' Convention
The Hoppin' John Fiddlers' Convention is a three-day annual festival held every September at the Shakori Hills Community Arts Center in Pittsboro, North Carolina. Since its establishment in 2007, the event has grown into a beloved celebration of traditional old-time and bluegrass music, attracting musicians and fans from across the region.
The convention features music competitions in various categories, including old-time and bluegrass bands, fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, bass, folk song, song duets, and instrument duos. Dance competitions for adults and youth are also a highlight of the event, showcasing the community’s vibrant cultural heritage.
Attendees can enjoy more than just music. The event includes workshops, showcases, and even film screenings that explore the history and traditions of Appalachian music. A unique feature of the festival is the presentation of the story of Naomi "Omie" Wise, a historical tale brought to life through readings and musical performances.
The festival also includes the Hoppin' John Cook-Off, where participants prepare creative takes on the classic Southern dish, blending culinary traditions with the musical festivities. With camping available on-site, visitors can immerse themselves in the full experience, enjoying a family-friendly atmosphere filled with dancing, storytelling, and craft vendors.
