Songs & Stories with Tim Wells

Saturday morning at 10am in the Dance Tent! Geared for children ages 3-5, young ones will love learning new songs, fingerplays, and stories they’ll even re-visit at home. Parents are welcome to join the circle and participate along with their children!

Tim Wells has been an early childhood educator for the past decade and has provided children's music programming with Hoppin John and the Grassroots Festival for the past several years.

Instrument Petting Zoo

We regret to announce that this has been cancelled due to High Strung’s high volume of store business during the back-to-school season.

Historic Fiddle Workshop

Don Rickert Lutherie will be conducting workshops on historic and contemporary fiddle set-up. This workshop, of particular interest to historic fiddling enthusiasts, will be in the area by the Don Rickert Lutherie and SG Fiddles vendor tents. This hands-on workshop will cover how to install the right strings and accessories, as well as proper bridge adjustment, on fiddles for various periods and genres going back to the 1700s. In addition to covering the basics of historically authentic fiddle setup, master period fiddlers will demonstrate the predominant playing styles of each period. Check at the vendor tent for times!

Musicians’ CD Sales!

Hoppin’ John will sell your cds for you! If you have made a cd and wish to sell it at the convention, bring a box to the merchandise shack at the top of the stage field, make a $10 donation, and collect your sales and remaining cds on Saturday night.

2011 Hoppin’ John Old-Time & Bluegrass

Fiddlers’ Convention,

Thursday – Saturday, Sept 15 - 17!

Excitement is in the air about this year‘s Hoppin’ John! With the Green Grass Cloggers 40th Anniversary Reunion, more dances than ever before inlcuding a Thursday night Rowdy Square Dance, Friday and Saturday with The Freight Hoppers, involvement from NC Squares and those Green Grass Possum Pickers, a cake walk and the usual contests, cook-off, showcases, and late-night anytime campfire jams, it‘s going to be the best yet! We’ve even got a little bluegrass for the kick-off with local boys, Big Fat Gap.

A few good volunteers are still needed to round out our staffing for the weekend. Volunteers receive free admission and camping in exchange for a four hour shift. We’re also looking for CAKE BAKERS! Just click on the Volunteer Button next to this box if you’re interested in helping out.

Bring your fiddles, banjos, guitars & dobros, best singing voices, basses, and mandolins! Grab your dancing shoes and polish up your moves...it’s almost here.

We wish to thank you all for sharing your love of old-time and traditional music with us here at Hoppin‘ John and with each other. The first Hoppin’ John was begun with the intention of bringing the magic of a fiddlers’ convention to this part of North Carolina, and preserving that unique old-time style of the Piedmont area. So far, so good, thanks to everyone who comes out and contributes their appreciation, dancing and musical magic! We love you all...

See you soon!!
